PRACTICING WHAT WE PREACH: Work by Maine Art Educators
January 16 through March 19, 2010 Last year, the Saco Museum's biennial student art show set a record for attendance while showcasing the work of local students in our public schools. Now's your chance to see the top-notch work being created by Maine's art teachers! The Saco Museum is pleased to present "Practicing What We Preach: Work by Maine Art Teachers," organized by the Maine Art Educators Association. This exhibition, which overlaps with National Youth Art Month in March 2010, is on view through March 19, 2010.
This exhibition brings together the creative work of art educators from around the state and celebrates the studio practice and exploration that takes place beyond the classroom. This show features a variety of media, including drawing, painting, printmaking, photography, sculpture, ceramics, jewelry, and fiber arts. Artists represented in this show teach in Maine's public and private schools and universities and are members of the Maine Art Educators Association, an arts advocacy organization that promotes the artistic learning of children, encourages innovation and research in art education, and the exchange of ideas and practices among teachers. Some 70 artists are represented, including:

ABOUT YOUTH ART MONTH Youth Art Month is an annual observance each March to emphasize the value of art education for all children and to encourage support for quality school art programs. It was created in 1961 by Art and Creative Materials Institute, a non-profit association of art and craft materials manufacturers, in cooperation with the National Art Educators Association. In 1984, ACMI created the Council for Art Education to administer the national Youth Art Month program and encourage funding for the program. Find out more at www.acminet.org/youth_art_month.htm.
