"After Hours" Maine Art Education Association Members Exhibition

January 14 through February 28, 2014
Public reception January 25, 1:00-3:00 pm
This exhibition will bring together the creative work of Art educators from around the state of Maine to celebrate the studio practice and exploration that takes place outside the classroom "after hours". A variety of mediums will be showcased including: drawing, painting, printmaking, photography, fiber art, sculpture, ceramics, digital art, and mixed media. The artists represented in this show teach in Maine's public and private schools and universities and are members of the Maine Art Educators Association - an arts advocacy organization that promotes the artistic learning of children, encourages innovation and research in art education and the exchange of ideas and practices among teachers.

Program Offerings for Schools

Bring your class to the Saco Museum between now through March 1st for a chance to see original art created by Maine art teachers. The museum is offering two programs based around the "After Hours" exhibition to educate students about how to look at and interpret art.

What do you See? What do you Feel? What do you think?

This 45 minute program introduces students to the idea that what they see in a piece of art and what they feel are valid. This program helps students begin to use what they see and feel as a way to think about art. Our experiential approach helps students understand that seeing, feeling, and thinking are important ways to understand the world around them, even though their experiences may be different from those of other people. This program uses the Token Response Game to get children engaging with the works of art.
- How can a work of art be loved by one person while being someone else's least favorite?
- Why does a work of art make you feel a certain way? What exactly is it about the art work that makes you feel sad, happy or excited?
- What is it about a work of art that connects you to that work and makes it seem relevant and important to your life?
- How does an artist evoke the look and feel of Maine through their art?
- What is the relationship between the artist's intentions when they make a piece of art, and the way the viewer reacts when seeing that piece?

A Sense of Maine

This 1 hour program develops a meaningful approach on how to look at and think about art as it relates to their home state of Maine. All of the artists in the "After Hours" exhibit live in Maine, and many chose to incorporate their sense of place into their work. Using visual thinking strategies the educator leading the program will encourage students to share their ideas about each piece.
- What's going on in this picture? [Studying the features in a work of art.]
- What do you see that makes you say that? [Describing the elements and principles.]
- What more can we find? [What meaning or purpose can we find in this work? What feeling, mood, or idea comes to mind after close examination using the elements and principles of art/design?]
- Which piece(s) in the exhibit most connect(s) with your sense of Maine?
- Which pieces might most connect with an out-of-stater's sense of Maine?
- Is there a piece that evokes an experience you've had in Maine?

In the second half of this program students will create their own Sense of Maine miniature collage in our downstairs classroom. They will be encouraged to really think about what their Maine experience has been, and what their home state means to them, and convey these ideas through their art. What they don't complete at the museum they can bring home to finish.
