| Bio/Hist. Notes | Annie Katherine Deering was born in Saco on January 2, 1892. She graduated from Smith College in 1915 and returned to Saco to settle down.She chose her father’s extensive book collection as her main vocation. Katharine, older sister of Joseph Deering II grew up in a world filled with books, volunteer work and travel. She never married and spent many years living with her widowed aunt, Helen Deering Love. With Mrs. Love she went to Europe 13 times, exploring most countries more than once. Katharine was elected President of the Maine CLub at Smith College in 1914 and was the secretary of the College Club of Saco during 1916 and 1917. She was a powerful social force for the Red Cross during WWII since she was a key person in Red Cross’s rolling of bandages, making mittens, garments, etc. She kept an account book of her activitiy in the Red Cross. She was president of the alliance of the Second Parish Unitarian Church in Saco, and she tended a productive garden at her summer house in Bay View. Annie Katharine Deering died December 1985. |
| Scope/Content Notes | This collection is comprised of ledgers, blueprints, newspaper clippings and a large amount of correspondences. The collection includes pieces not only from his life time, but spans both to his father and grandfather. The collection is comprised of correspondence for all three men of the Deering family, along with a complete series of Katherine Deering (sister of J.G. Deering). Katherine’s series contains many pieces relating to her work with the College Club of Saco. Included is a large scrapbook from Katharine’s Smith College days. Within the collection there are also many pieces that deal directly with the Deering Home (including blueprints and photographs). Another large part of the collection is business records, pertaining to the family lumber industry. |
| Provenance | At present, there are no accession or a deed of gift records for this collection. However, it was with the Joseph Godfrey Deering II Collection and we feel that this may have been given to us by Joseph after his sister’s death in 1985. Until documentation can be found, we will accept this explanation for provenance. |

| Series Descriptions | Series 1. Scrapbooks. 1911-1915.
This series consists of small articles about local Maine events or
history collected by Annie Katharine and put into a very small
scrapbook. A very simple two whole binding that may have been
originally in a small notebook. A cotton ribbin was used to attached
all the pages back together. Larger scrapbook documenting
Katharine’s activities at Smith College. Series 2. The College Club of Saco. 1913-1917. Annie Katharine Deering was secretary of the Saco College Club from 1916 through 1917. This series consists of the Club’s by-laws, constitutions, meeting minutes, financial records and correspondences. Series 3. Travel Journal. 1936. This series has Ms. Deering’s journal when she traveled abroad in 1936. Included are botanical specimans she picked up during her travels. Series 4. American Red Cross. 1940-1946. Katharine was involved with the Red Cross during WWII. This series consists of two ledgers. One for the American Red Cross, Saco, Maine Branch of production records (sweather, mittens, and other needed clothing) and the York County Chapter in Saco, Maine listing shipment records. |
