| Bio/Hist. Notes | Adelaide Haley.
Daughter of John Haley and Abbe A. Batchelder was born on October 16,
1875 in Saco, York County, Maine and died March 16, 1961. She attended
Wellesley College before returning back to Saco. She was an avid
historican and researcher and had written books on local history. She acquired a vast number of research notes and information to write a book on Sao History but that never came to fruition. Instead, she offered her research notes to Roy Fairfield, who did his own research on Saco History before publishing Sands, Spindles and Steeples. She had one brother, George E. Haley who died in 1964. George Allen Haley, a distant cousin of Adelaid, was born in Saco, Maine on April 22, 1851. The son of William Haley Jr. and Olive Euphemia (Gatchell) Haley. He Married Annie M. Brackett at Biddeford, Maine on November 11, 1876. She was born in Biddeford, Maine on January 7, 1851. She was the daughter of Amos S. and Hannah KIey (Tibbettes) Brackett, and died January 9, 1926 in San Diego, California where both Annie and George Allen both lived. George Allen Haley and wife Annie M. had a son Herbert Brackett Haley, born 20 June 1889 at Carmi, Pratt County, Kansas. George Haley died May 25, 1945. John A. Haley and Adelaide communicsated via corresondences on family history research. |
| Scope/Content Notes | This
collection is comprised of Adelaide Haley’s and George
Haley’s research notes on family history and Saco History. The
vast amount of papers collected and notes written were difficult to
process and placed in some kind of order that would be helpful to
researchers. This collection was separated into a number of series
starting with personal corresponences, published and unpublished
manuscripts, books, research notes for specific proujcts, and
genelaogical notes as well. Anyone interested in researching local Saco
History will find this collection fascinating. Genealogical work on the Haley family is vast and thorough. |
| Provenance | On June 12, 1990, the Adelaide Haley papers were moved from Saco Museum to the Dyer Library’s Special Collections Department. There was no current inventory at the time nor an accession record that we know of. We can assume that since John Haley was Dyer Library’s first librarian, and Adelaide used the Dyer Library quite heavily for her research, these naturally come to the Dyer Library Library Association. Audry Milne, head of the DLA collections committee wanted a roungh inventory of each box brought over from the museum with correlations to objects in the museum collection to show some king of interconnectiedness. Although an inventory was done by Roy Fairfield and Sallie Huot in 1994, not correlation between museum artifacts and this collection were ever made. This massive collection of research and genealogical notes has been processed and is considered part of the Museum Archives open for research by all patrons of Dyer Library and Saco Museum. |
