DYER LIBRARY/SACO MUSEUM ONE OF 75 ORGANIZATIONS NATIONWIDE TO RECEIVE BIG READ GRANT FROM THE NATIONAL ENDOWMENT FOR THE ARTS
The Dyer Library and Saco Museum announced today that the organization has been chosen to receive a $7,500 grant from the National Endowment for the Arts to host the Big Read in Saco. Together, the Dyer Library and Saco Museum are one of 75 not-for-profits—including arts and cultural organizations, libraries, and universities—to receive a grant to host a Big Read project between September 2010 and June 2011. The Big Read in Saco will focus on Mark Twain’s classic, The Adventures of Tom Sawyer. Activities and events will occur during the month of June 2011.
The Big Read gives communities the opportunity to read, discuss, and celebrate one of 31 selections from U.S. and world literature. Since the 2006 pilot program with ten participating organizations, the NEA has given more than 800 grants to support local Big Read projects. The Dyer Library and Saco Museum are the only organization in Maine to receive a Big Read grant for the 2010-2011 cycle.
The library and museum will receive a Big Read grant of $7,500 to promote and carry out community-based reading programs, featuring activities such as a scavenger hunt, a pirate tour of Wood Island, a cardboard regatta, a walking tour of Laurel Hill Cemetery, book discussions, lectures, movie screenings, and performing arts events. Participating communities also receive high-quality, free-of-charge educational materials to supplement each title, including Reader’s, Teacher’s, and Audio Guides. Dyer Library Executive Director Leslie Rounds said, “We are thrilled to have such a wonderful opportunity to share this amazing piece of American literature.”
