The Saco Museum is pleased to report that it has acquired two large-format photographs by Arundel photographer Heath Paley for its permanent collection: "Water View," showing Biddeford's Main Street, and "Breakfast at the Palace," a view of a downtown Biddeford diner. "Water View" was featured in the Saco Museum's recent exhibition "The 2012 Mill-ennial: Celebrating the Art and Artists of the Cities on the Saco" and is also featured in the current Southern Maine Art Guide. Both photographs were donated by Heath Paley.

As Paley states in the catalogue for the 2012 Mill-ennial (available at the Saco Museum Gift Shop or online at, the images are part of a photo essay on the "impacts of globalization, and the Biddeford/Saco area is at the heart of the study." The photos explore this idea through their depiction of change and stasis in the businesses and people of Biddeford's downtown. "I photograph to observe and express," writes Paley. "As one who believes the universal is inherent in the particular, I feel close observation and clear expression nurture perception."

Paley's photographs are large-scale digital composite images. He spends hours, days, or even weeks photographing a subject, and then "stitches" the individual shots together on a computer screen to compose the final image. "I can shoot for hours and then come back the next day or the next week and add to the collective palette," he writes, "eventually building a group of shots that more nearly embody the essence of the place, the light, the people."
