EXHIBITION DATES: August 11 - October 30, 2005
The exhibition at the Saco Museum, Simple Gifts: The Alfred Shakers 1783-1931,
brings together some of the most celebrated pieces from the Alfred (Maine)
community. Over 100 historic images, drawings, furniture, smalls, and fancy
goods are used to explore all aspects of Alfred Shaker community life, including
industries and religion.

Home of the Shaker Goods, Alfred, Maine
This is the first major exhibit in many years of Maine Shaker items outside
Sabbathday Lake Shaker Village in New Gloucester, Maine. Sabbathday Lake is the
only active Shaker community in the world and is where the Alfred Shakers moved
in 1931. Simple Gifts is a collaborative effort between the Saco Museum and
Sabbathday Lake Shaker Museum.
**Lecture series at the Saco Museum**
Simple Gifts: The Alfred Shakers
All lectures begin at 7:30 pm and will be held at the Saco Museum or the Deering
Room at the Dyer Library. Space is limited, so we encourage you to arrive in
plenty of time to find a seat. The Saco Museum is open free of charge on
Thursday evenings from 4 8 pm, if you wish to tour the Shaker exhibit prior to
attending the lecture.

The Beautiful Order of God
A performance by the Enfield Shaker Singers at the Temple in Ocean Park. The
program will be a combination of music, dance and readings from Shaker
journals, letters and spirit communications.
